Mankind
in Desperate Need of the Gospel
(Romans 1:21)
One of the reasons mankind cannot escape the wrath of God is that mankind rejects God. To glorify God is the rightful duty that every creature owes to the Creator, yet mankind seeks to refuse this fundamental order.
1. Being Thankless, and Their Thoughts Became Futile
Although people receive and enjoy everything from God, they stubbornly seek to deny Him. Being thankless, they have no ground on which faith can take root, and the possibility of having faith becomes even more remote. To deny God is to deny the greatest reality in the universe. In such a condition, no matter how much effort they make, their thoughts cannot approach the truth; instead, they are ruled by the desires of the flesh and have no choice but to pursue what is futile.
2. Their Hearts Were Darkened, Leading Them to Practice Evil
When people are seized by false information offered by the world and the futile thoughts that arise from it, their hearts become darkened. As a result, God’s influence can no longer operate within them, and the power of sin grows increasingly strong. This is not a problem that can be resolved by possessing a great amount of spiritual knowledge. Once the heart is darkened, a person can no longer recognize sin as sin; instead, that very knowledge is used to rationalize oneself in a more subtle and deceitful way. In the end, spiritual darkness leads to moral corruption, and this inevitably manifests itself in evil deeds.
3. Failing to Glorify God and Rejecting Him
Unlike all other created beings, mankind alone fails to glorify God and rejects Him. Here lies the reason mankind cannot escape the wrath of God. Today, however, through the sacrifice of Christ, we have been rescued from God’s wrath. Therefore, we must now strive to put away our former posture of rejecting God. In all things, let us glorify God and give thanks for all that He has bestowed. Let us reject the futility of worldly thinking and renew our minds with the truth. Let us not allow our hearts to grow dark, but fill them fully with the Lord.
