Much More Saved by His Life

Our Salvation Made More Certain
(Romans 5:9-11)
If we are uncertain whether we will be saved on the last day, we cannot have joy, love the church, or devote ourselves to the Lord. But when we consider what God has already done to justify us, it becomes clear that He will work all the more for us from now on.
1. We Were Enemies of God
We were enemies of God. We stood with Satan on the side opposed to God and hated Him. We also carried the label “children of wrath.” But our situation changed completely because Jesus took upon Himself the punishment we deserved and suffered God’s wrath on the cross. At the cost of His suffering, God justified us. We no longer need to fear the dreadful wrath that will be poured out upon all sinners on the last day.
2. Our Risen Savior
After sacrificing His Son to redeem us, would God simply abandon us, saying, “You’re on your own now”? Jesus reconciled us to God through His death. If a dying Savior did all this for us, how much more will our risen Savior do? The distance from sin to grace was enormous. Yet God accomplished the tremendous work of bringing sinners into His grace. By comparison, the distance from grace to glory is relatively short. Having accomplished something so great, could He be unable to do something far smaller? Or would He be unwilling?
3. Delivered Even from Doubt
In the past, our salvation was perfectly accomplished, and in the future, we will no longer be objects of God’s wrath. Then surely we are safe today as well, in the time between. “But I still keep committing sins.” Sin could not overcome the Lord’s work of redemption, and His completed redemption cannot be reversed. If our Savior has delivered us from sin and from the judgment of wrath, He has delivered us even from doubt about our salvation! Now we have a joy that never leaves us. Let us cast aside all doubt and serve the Lord faithfully with all our hearts and minds.
