The Grief of the Holy Spirit

(Ephesians 4:30)

God is displeased with all sin, but He is especially shocked and deeply grieved when His children sin against Him.

1. The Wrath of the Holy Spirit
Many believe that once they repent, God will forget all their sins, even if they commit evil deeds. However, sins against God do not disappear. God is furious over the sins that grieve Him. Some may attempt to destroy the church and find comfort in the thought, “I was worried about being struck by lightning, but nothing happened.” Yet God’s wrath will be fully revealed on the day of redemption. For those who obey the Holy Spirit, it will be a day of redemption, but for those who grieve Him, it will be a day of wrath.

2. Those He Has Sealed
Until that day comes, the One who has sealed us is the Holy Spirit. He shows that we belong to God. He not only guarantees our salvation but also cares for us, protecting us from sin and guiding us safely to heaven. Yet, how can we, who have received such grace, wound His heart? As our helper, He helps, advocates for, comforts us, and guarantees our salvation. How could we betray Him?

3. The Duty of Saints
When, among Christians, lies are prevalent, grudges are held, revenge is sought, stealing against the church is widespread, and rotten words are carelessly spoken, all of which hinder the church’s edification, the Holy Spirit suffers greatly, even to the point of weeping. From those who grieve the Holy Spirit, He may be quenched. When that happens, the power He once provided will vanish, and the door of blessings will close. Now, let us no longer cause the Holy Spirit to suffer—He who seeks to unite the church in love. Let us obey the Holy Spirit, who is willing to help us. Until the day of redemption, let us please the Holy Spirit, who has sealed us.
