Grace Across the Ages
(Romans 4:23-25)
When God called Abraham and granted him justification by faith, it was not a special privilege given only to Abraham in the distant past. It was the prototype of the way of salvation that God Himself established for those who would later be saved—a highway of grace prepared for us.
1. The Same Rock
The marvelous grace of God, who gave His Son, works for all who believe across every age. Even the sins of Abraham, who lived two thousand years before the cross, were fully dealt with through Christ. Abraham and we alike stand on the same rock—the redemption accomplished by Jesus Christ. Abraham had no written Word of God. Yet even with such limited revelation, he relied on “God, who gives life to the dead.” With the full truth of Scripture and the witness of the Holy Spirit given to us, there is no reason for our faith to be weaker than Abraham’s.
2. His Death and Resurrection
Just as the high priest of old had to enter the Most Holy Place with the blood of the sacrifice and then come out again for it to be known that the sacrifice had been accepted, Jesus also had to rise from the dead and appear before God after being put to death. Through His death, He fully accomplished the efficacy of redemption, and through His resurrection, He officially confirmed that the redemption had been accepted.
3. The Way Before Us
Through Abraham, who believed in the God who surely fulfills what He has spoken and even raises the dead to accomplish it, the way of faith leading to salvation was opened. That same way remains open before us today. In the short span of our lives, what we ought to do is praise Him, give thanks to Him, and glorify Him all our days. Let us hold fast to the death and resurrection of Christ and entrust the rest of our lives and our whole hearts completely to the faithful love of the Lord.
