Peace with God

(Romans 5:1)

Among believers, some have no assurance that they are saved. Others believe they are saved but are not confident that their salvation will remain secure. Still others take salvation too lightly. These are some of Satan’s chief tactics to keep believers from living according to the will of the Lord.

1. God’s Assurance of Security
If we assume that a believer can lose salvation through his own failures even after being saved, he cannot help but live under constant tension. Of course, this does not mean that we should live however we please simply because our salvation cannot be lost. But it is also a misunderstanding to think that, once we are saved, maintaining our salvation is up to us. God is faithful. The exceeding greatness of His power toward us and His mighty power give us an unshakable assurance of security.

2. The Sweet Quiet of the Soul
One of the greatest blessings that follows justification by faith is peace with God. We were naturally enemies of God, and God also regarded us as His enemies. But through the blood of the cross, we have been reconciled to God, and through this reconciliation, we have peace with Him. We who once feared that we might lose our salvation can now enjoy “the sweet quiet of the soul.” Even as we acknowledge that we are sinners, the deep gratitude and wonder we feel toward God, who loved us in spite of our sin, humble us and lead us to serve Him.

3. A Faith That Stands Firm
Those who have peace with God no longer try to hide their weaknesses but prepare themselves to enter the spiritual battle as soldiers. Like Roman soldiers standing firm on the battlefield in shoes fitted with studs, we stand firm for Christ with our feet fitted with the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15). No longer should uncertainty about salvation cause us to stumble spiritually or lose our footing in our minds, because we know with certainty that God is on our side.
