The Status of the Church

(Ephesians 1:21-22)

Saying “Jesus is the Head of the church” looks like it elevates Jesus – but it may not be so for people who view the church as something insignificant and on the fringes of the world. Therefore, before emphasizing that Jesus is the Head of the church, we should first clearly emphasize that He is the Head of creation.

1. The Lord Is the Head of Creation
Saying “Jesus is the Head of creation” means that He has sovereignty over it. If God made Someone this great to be Head of the church, this tells us that the church is also glorious. He is the One who all creation must bow to and worship, and the One who even the holy angels must obey. The church is the entity that accepts His guidance and represents Him before creation.

2. Sinners Have Received God’s Grace
When God treasured the church like this, was it because members of the church are especially admirable people? This is not so. On the contrary, they know well that they are sinners, and so they acknowledge that they cannot live without God’s grace. Sincere repentance gives them the chance to serve the One who ascended to heaven’s throne, and they became representatives of the One who is above every authority in heaven and on earth.

3. Ministry for God
Those who once belonged to the Devil and should have gone to hell were redeemed in the Son of God – so regarding our lives – the most important and essential issue is already solved. What we must now do is be responsible for the work done for God. Becoming a Christian does not mean we have a chance to receive temporary resources from God, but it means we become representatives of the One who is above creation. Let’s now be faithful in our duty to display God’s character. Let’s assume the admirable responsibilities given to us, so that God can be glorified through us.
