Masters Under the Lord
(Ephesians 6:9)
The world constantly urges us to compare, complain, and fight. But Christians live with the awareness of their Master in heaven. Trusting in the righteous God who will judge all things fairly, they remain faithful to the duties given to them today and reveal the righteousness of God who is with them.
1. A Relationship of Mutual Submission
“Pitiful servant. Wicked master.” Such thoughts prevail in the world. But in reality, whether one is a master or a servant, each has their own share of responsibility. A master is not someone who exercises authority recklessly, but someone who carries a burden that must be carried by someone. A beautiful relationship between master and servant is one marked by mutual submission. The master should seek the happiness of the servant, while the servant, in turn, should make an effort to understand the master’s heart.
2. Those Who Serve One Master
Just as servants obey their masters in Christ, those who are masters must do the same to their servants. This is because both masters and servants are under the same Master. The attitude and manner in which masters treat their servants reflect how they treat their own Master in heaven. If a master fails to restrain their own temperament and treats their servants recklessly, the servants will struggle to obey from the heart and lose the will to work with sincere passion. Masters must not forget that their authority is functional and temporary.
3. The Lord Who Judges with Justice
In this world, it is often seen as natural for those in high social positions to look down on others and show off their authority. But God shows no partiality to people. The position a person held on earth may even work against them on the day of judgment. Regardless of the external circumstances each person was given, everyone will be judged according to what they have done. To each one who does evil, there will be tribulation and anguish; but to each one who does good, there will be glory, honor, and peace.
