The Foundation of
the Apostles and Prophets
(Ephesians 2:19-20)
The Church is the house of God. Jesus Christ serves as the chief cornerstone of this house, becoming the foundation upon which all the construction that will take place in the future. This house is still in the process of being built, and in the early stage of building, God entrusted the most fundamental task of constructing this house to Christ’s disciples. He established the apostles and prophets as the foundation for building His house.
1. The Defined Truth of the Gospel
The scope of the truth of the Gospel has already been defined by the apostles and prophets. They revealed the meaning of God’s will behind Christ’s death and resurrection, and explained its significance for us. These individuals received the revelation of God, bringing forth the Gospel concealed within the Old Testament. They accomplished the New Testament and protected it, enduring all forms of persecution.
2. Those who Sway and Those who Safeguard
Regrettably, throughout the history of Christianity, many individuals have disregarded the role of the apostles and prophets, claiming they have received unrevealed revelations and deviating from the Gospel established by these apostles and prophets. If the foundation had been shaken by these claims, the house of God would not have been firmly established, and we would not have received the perfect Gospel. It is thanks to the dedicated faith of our faithful predecessors, who risked their lives to safeguard this foundation, that we can safely hear the Gospel and receive salvation.
3. For the Beautiful House of God
If we comprehend the Gospel’s value and God’s desire to save all nations to the ends of the earth, we may find ourselves unsatisfied with merely receiving salvation through the Gospel. Instead, we should strive to pass it on to the next generation. The Lord did not surpass the foundation of the apostles and prophets; rather, He humbly became the chief cornerstone. Let us, too, humbly bear the mission of the Gospel entrusted to us so that the house of God can be beautifully completed.
