Duties are Given in His Name (Romans 12:1-8)

Do you feel like the duties given to you in church are smaller than other people’s? Do you think the fruits produced by your faith are less significant than other people’s? Since God personally gave each person their duty according to His will and in His name (Col 3:17), there is no such thing as a small duty before God.

1. Duties are God’s calling

God gave us our duties so that we can be gloried in heaven. They also guide us so we can safely reach the Day when our salvation is complete (that is, so our salvation does not go wrong). Therefore, instead of treating our duties lightly or getting a so-called ‘bigger duty’ out of greed, we should understand that our duties are God’s calling and be faithful to them (Mt 25:21).

2. Duties are an opportunity

Many people hold to the idea, ‘God is the One who helps me’. But the fundamental purpose that God is with us is to call us to help with His work (1 Cor 4:1). The irony is that God’s work is to protect us from the enemy and ensure that we are saved, and it give us the opportunity, through the church, to transform into people who are worthy to enter heaven.

3. Duties are a testimony

God gave us the name, ‘Jesus’. This does not mean it becomes disconnected from God and reveals power in us all by itself. It means we became one with the God of salvation and must glorify God’s name through our lives. Likewise, since we were raised up by God, let’s try not to raise ourselves higher, like we still lack something – but let’s testify with certainty to the name ‘Jesus’ inside us by faithfully doing the duties given to us (2 Tim 2:15).
